Sweetgreen Debuts Its Healthy Eats at Fifth and Grand

By Eddie Kim | Downtown News

Anyone looking for a healthy, produce-forward shop to grab a quick bite now has a new option in the Financial District.

Sweetgreen, the national chain that specializes in custom salads and grain bowls, opens its first Downtown L.A. location on Thursday, July 6. It fills a space at the foot of the CalEdison building that was formerly filled by the Thai restaurant Essan and a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.

The roughly 1,700-square-foot storefront is trimmed in minimalistic concrete, white tile and natural wood, with tables, communal seating and an outdoor patio.

The menu, meanwhile, is categorized into sections for salads and warm bowls, with seasonal specials such as the Mexican Corn Elote bowl with quinoa, arugula and goat cheese. Diners can also build their own bowl or salad by picking out ingredients and sauces.

Sweetgreen should be a popular addition to a stretch of the Financial District that's largely lacking in casual food options.

One last note: All proceeds from opening day go directly to the LA Food Policy Council’s corner store and market initiative, which aims to bring healthy produce and food to underserved communities.
