Commission by new owners of PacMutual Building shows commitment to their community
LOS ANGELES, July 24, 2012 – Rising Realty Partners (RRP) took possession of the PacMutual building just three months ago and they have already started adding color to the neighborhood. As a celebration of the new downtown renaissance and cityscape, they commissioned Los Angeles artist, Andre Miripolsky, to create a 15 x 50 mural at the southeast corner of 5th and Olive, in Pershing Square Park. It was installed on Wednesday, July 13th.
Miripolsky was an obvious choice for RRP and the Pershing Square Advisory Board because of his reputation and involvement in the local community. Miripolsky is well known for creating the now famous “ViVA L.A.” catchphrase, the symbol and battle cry for improvements downtown, and he has long been an advocate for the arts movement in the area. He is on the board of the Downtown Artwalk and lives and works at the Brewery, the world’s largest art complex, located in Los Angeles.
“I was thrilled when Christopher [Rising] approached me to do a piece in such an iconic location,” says Miripolsky. “Pershing Square is home to the fabulous Ricardo Legorreta bell tower, but along with the rest of downtown, it was showing signs of neglect. The newly revitalized downtown is an explosion of art and life, and it’s about time Pershing Square saw some brush strokes.”
“We chose Andre because of his shared enthusiasm for the renaissance going on Downtown,” says Christopher Rising, President and COO of Rising Realty Partners. “The mural is a great follow up to Zip Car and Neighborhood Valet. It's another small, although important example of RRP’s and PacMutual's commitment to the neighborhood.”
Miripolsky’s mural is a take on his now famous 3-D skyline, originally commissioned by the Central City Association in 2005. This updated version includes the PacMutual building, which is across the street from Pershing Square, as well as the Pershing Square Bell Tower, L.A.Live and the Ritz Carlton.
The PacMutual building was originally built in 1908, after the 1906 earthquake destroyed Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company’s San Francisco headquarters. It was a center for commerce and activity during downtown’s prominent years at the turn of the century and Rising Realty Partners plans to return it to strong standing as a gathering place for the community.
About Andre Miripolsky:
Andre Miripolsky’s keen understanding of pop imagery and energy has resulted in collaborations with Elton John (famous Central Park “Piano Key” costume and 1997 stage acts for his “Tonight Show” appearance), Bette Midler (album package/visual design for her worldwide “DeTour”), Quincy Jones, Rolling Stones, Gato Barbieri, Robin Williams, Beastie Boys, Cheap Trick, MTV and “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno. In conjunction with the revolutionary redevelopment of Downtown Los Angeles, Andre Miripolsky was commissioned in 2005 by the Central City Association of L.A. to create a large 3-D wall sculpture depicting his vision of the exploding Downtown L.A. skyline. This image, coupled with his phrase “Viva L.A.” has blossomed to much acclaim and been a key element of the branding of the new and improved city center. Continuing his commitment in representing Los Angeles with the greatest joie de vivre, Miripolsky was asked by Red Line Tours, to create a commemorative ticket series called “The Icons of Hollywood.” He also designed double-decker buses for Starline Tours, as well as a mosaic of mirror piano that will appear in the forecourt of the Egyptian theater as part of the Hollywood Arts Council, “Play Me, I’m Yours,” program.
